momentous maximus

There are those momentous occasions that make a parent wish time didn't race by at what seems like the speed of light.

first steps, first words, first time they go potty like a big girl or boy, first day of school, first time they go off to middle school and then high school, and...

...the first time they take the car keys to drive themselves to school.

Yep, he did it. I know he did because I called the finance office up at the high school to ask if he'd bought his parking permit for the day. I also emailed his homeroom teacher to make sure he made it to homeroom after parking in the student parking lot.

Girl can't help it...she's a mom!

Funny thing happened because of this momentous occasion...

As I'm outside watching LB drive off, AW is inside getting ready for school at the snail's pace that he exists in. He ends up running far enough behind that he misses the bus. Well, Big B has the Chevy, and you see from the above pictures that LB has the Pontiac.

We only have two cars.

My F-i-L hasn't brought the Malibu down for LB yet, so he's using our cars in the meantime. It's going on 9:30 a.m. and my juvenile delinquent is upstairs skipping school. The lady in the attendance office thought it was kind of funny. The county schools have a half day today anyway, because today is our high school's graduation.

After some studying, and LB's safe return home from school, we'll be heading out to witness another momentous occasion.

a look at the bright side

I'm trying to stay positive, but it's been tough amidst the funky-funky-doldrums kinda mood I've been in lately. This weekend was a blessing as it kept us busy and left little time to ponder that which makes me unhappy, and alas I really don't have much to be unhappy about anyway.

It has to be the hormones...

Friday we went to see Land of the Lost with friends. It was the other mom, myself and 7 PWP (people with penises). We enjoyed the movie. There was very little I could remember from the TV show days. It was funny nonetheless.

Beware the Sleestaks

Yesterday we headed over to the same friends' house for an afternoon filled with a muddy football game, jousting in the jumpy castle, and a game of basketball. Oh, we can't forget the kids firing off the potato gun. It was a blast. No pun intended. It was so nice to get out of the house and just hang out with a fun group of people.

I should mention I decided to boycott homework all weekend! I'm going to give that a try every weekend. It's for the best.

Today we had the American Legion baseball season opener and it was a double-header. Our guys lost both games. It should be an interesting season. Our team will be one of the smallest. Most teams consist of a good amount of college players, as AL baseball allows Freshman in high school up through I guess the Freshman year of college. We have one college-aged player, and he's not the biggest guy on our team by any means.

Tomorrow I head out to the ENT doctor. Aside from that the week is pretty much uneventful...and I must have just taken a hit off someone's crack pipe! Lest I forget the boys' dental appointments Tuesday, a baseball game Thursday, and then there's Friday.

Not only is Friday our high school's graduation, it is also D-Day. We're not talking Normandy type, we're talking Driving-Day.

LB is legal to drive as of June 12th.

I'm. trying. to. think. positive...

words of wisdom

Christy posted 20 Things Every New Nurse Needs to Know. Thanks Christy!

I don't know if it's the area I live in, but I find one thing incredibly annoying while traversing the area's roadways, and that is people who don't use their turn signals. There are also the ones who wait until just before they turn to give us the ole blinker.

Sure when you're coming up on a right or left turn and the person in front of you starts braking it's a sign they're going to turn, but wouldn't some advanced warning be nice?

Then there are the people who just love their brakes and feel the need to ride them incessantly....so you're left unsure.

How about when people change lanes? Is it too much to ask to signal first? What do people think that little projection sticking out from their steering wheel is?

Well, it's not just for rainy days.

Grr.

I'm keeping this short today since we're learning about fluids, electrolytes and acid-base balance. I need to spend a lot of time studying.

Story of my life!

in a moment of silence

Last night at the homecoming football game for our local high school, before the American Anthem was played, we were asked to take part in a moment of silence.

October 23, 2008, will be remembered forever by two families as they lost their sons to a fatal car crash that evening. One of the boys graduated this past June, and the other was a senior, both from our local high school.

So in the crisp fall air we bowed our heads and paid respect. I also said a little prayer, hoping to never be the parent who receives the dreaded phone call, or knock on the door.

This really hits home because, if you follow my blog or know us, you know my 15 year old son recently received his learner's permit.

Today ends the annual National Teen Driver Safety Week, October 19-25. By October 24th, seven teens, including the two spoken of above had died in traffic accidents, in Virginia, this year...this week.

That fact alone makes me shudder.

I am extremely proud to say my son is taking part in a club at school that involves this very subject, YOVASO. The club's mission involves teens in making wise choices as they get behind a wheel.

Tonight is the homecoming dance. Before the dance a bunch of us parents are putting on a dinner for our sophomores. I like the idea. For one it's less expensive than them dining out, and it will be an occasion they can remember in years to come. This will be the last year that my husband and/or I needs to chaffeur BZ to his major social events.

This time next year, I'll say good-bye to BZ as he gets in his car to go pick up his date. I will have to take a deep breath, and hope he makes wise decisions. Of course that goes for every time he steps out the door.

I haven't gotten any gray hairs yet? I'll certainly have plenty by the time AW reaches this milestone.

l.w.a.i.

living while ability impaired

That's me, today. Dare I get behind a wheel and drive an automobile, or speak to another person, or or or, take a nursing exam? I really, seriously thought about calling my instructor to see if I could schedule to take the exam some other time. Then I thought better of it, that would be a hassle. So I hopped in the family roadster, drove the 14 or so miles in to town, none of which is remembered, and attempted to take the test. It turned out not to be such a bad deal. Checked for my score online earlier and it had already been posted--33/35. That would be a 92%.

Yeah, see...I really shouldn't even be typing! Here I am babbling on and haven't even mentioned how my abilities are impaired! Ehh, who knows? Flu? onset of sinus infection? ...just basically feeling like crappola deluxe!

Time to go crawl back into bed, and attempt to watch an episode of House.
