sleep habits of an infant

Insomnia: trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early.

How about all the above?

That's me! It goes in cycles. I'll have a few nights where I either wake up in the middle of the night, such as tonight, or I wake up around 4 a.m.

Either way, not good!

Then I guess because I am so exhausted I'll have a few nights where I'll sleep like a log, and every parent's dream...
through the night! Too bad I'm 37 years old! Might as well be an infant!

One cause of insomnia is stress. No!? You don't say!

"Having un-refreshing sleep (not feeling well rested), even after sleeping 7 to 8 hours at night". 7-8 hours!? If only! My average these days is probably more like 5 and that's a stretch many nights.

I hope your sleep habits stay adaptive! I couldn't do it anymore by my second semester in the program. I was really caffeine addicted which made me even more anxious than already am! This semester I have a routine, which I estimate is a little more difficult to keep for mothers (I know when my mom asks me to help her out by picking up my little bro from school on days that I don't expect to, I already feel thrown-off), but for school, I think it really helps. I take a nap every single day for 2-3 hours at some point between 3 and 6pm. I'm well-rested when I do my homework in the evenings after dinner, so I can concentrate better, and if I have to stay up a little bit late some nights, I catch up on the sleep the next afternoon, not letting the sleep deprivation extend into too many days. I'm so in the habit that one day I had an off-unit rotation that started at 2, and my instructor was like "Why are you not your usual self?" and I finally figured out it was because it was my nap time :) But when 6 rolled around, I was myself again!

Anyway my point is that I really advise getting your body in the rhythm of regular sleep and wake states. Easier said than done, but life is sooo much easier once it is done!! Good luck!!
